The School of Mathematics and Computer Science was first instituted as the Department of Mathematics in 1994, admitting undergraduate students of applied mathematics and teacher students of mathematics. Once the admission of teacher students was terminated in state-run universities in Iran in 1999, the first group of undergraduate students of pure mathematics were admitted to the department. In 2000, with the approval from Iran’s Council of Higher Education Development, the first master’s program on pure mathematics was introduced and later in the same year, the first group of associate of science (A.S.) students were admitted to the Computer Science Department. Accordingly, the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, consisting of Mathematics Department and Computer Science Department, was founded in 2002 as one of the schools at Damghan University (then Damghan University of Basic Sciences). In 2005, the school’s Educational Council and the university’s Board of Directors assented to the branching of the Mathematics Department into the Pure Mathematics Department and Applied Mathematics Department. In September 2007, the Computer Science Department closed the admission of associate of science (A.S.) students and started to admit undergraduate students. With the issuing of updated syllabi for undergraduate mathematics in 2010 (the Supreme Council of Educational Planning), the Council of Higher Education Development conceded that the school admits undergraduate students in the majors of Mathematics and Applications, Statistics and Applications, and Computer Science. The first master’s program and the first doctoral program in the field of scientific computing were also offered to computer science candidates in the same year. Currently, the school has three departments (Mathematics and Applications, Computer Science, and Statistics and Applications) and 29 faculty members ranking as instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor. Students are enrolled in three bachelor’s majors (Mathematics and Applications, Statistics and Applications, and Computer Science), and three majors (Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science) offered at both the master's and doctoral levels.
